SABEL Saddlery was approached by Stuart Haygarth, Lighting Designer to produce a set of six leather, hand-stitched cones to complete a lighting installation. It was a challenging project, but we are delighted to have completed our second commission from Stuart.
The work is called EMBER and was commissioned by the Abu Dhabi Cultural Department as part of the Abu Dhabi Art Fair 2012. It is a light installation created in collaboration with local crafts women using the old craft of palm frond weaving (Khoos). The piece is inspired by the traditional female clothing called the Abaya and a traditional conical shaped food cover made from Khoos called the Mekapah.
