Mia Sabel & Mel Howse skydive in aid of QEST
Mia Sabel & Mel Howse skydive in aid of QEST
Monday, 6 May 2013
UPDATE: 7 June 2013
Mia and Mel are safely back to earth and have raised £1,000 so far. Donations are still welcome until 30 June 2013.
On Wednesday, 5 June 2013 in Salisbury Wiltshire, two (mad) QEST Scholars, Mia and Mel, have decided to throw themselves out of an airplane with the Red Devils, all for the benefit of QEST. They are going to experience the adrenaline rush of tandem skydiving with the Parachute Regiment Free-fall Team, accelerating from 0 -120mph in 10 seconds, free-falling for 45 seconds from 13,000ft, followed by a 5 minute canopy ride, attached to an experienced tandem instructor.
As they have both benefited from a QEST Scholarship, they both want to give something back and are requesting sponsorship for the jump. The tickets were won in a competition, so all money will go to QEST.
Please give generously to preserve craft skills in this country. Fill in the Gift Aid Envelope, donate at www.justgiving.com/jumpforqest or text your donation (QEST99 £5) to 70070.

Mia Sabel, SABEL Saddlery & Leather Design
Bespoke Leather Design for Horse, Human, Home
Following a successful career in brand, design and
theatre, Mia Sabel left her job in the City to retrain as a
Saddler. Mia now uses traditional saddlery techniques
and materials to create a range of classic leather
products: hand-made, hand-stitched and hand-finished
in England. Whether off-the-shelf, personalised,
customised or bespoke, Mia is passionate about
creating works of excellence that will last a lifetime.
Why jump for QEST?
A QEST scholarship in 2010 allowed Mia to complete her Saddlery exams and after a further two years experience, is now a Qualified Saddler. Mia also studied upholstery, restoration and bag making with the Award. Now, in addition to her award-winning saddlery, Mia’s work also includes leather restoration, upholstery, prototyping, product development and bespoke leather design for horse, human and home. QEST allows scholars such as Mia to enhance their traditional craft skills and enables these skills to thrive. In addition to training funds, QEST also supports its scholars in a variety of ways - Mia's work was showcased by both Fortnum & Mason (where she was presented to the Queen) and Holland & Holland in London in 2012.

Mel Howse is a glass artist with a significant track
record in high profile public, architectural and
ecclesiastical installation work. Mel became a
Queen Elizabeth Scholar for her work with enamels
and has a number of Sussex heritage awards to her
name. Many of Mel's commissions involve working
with architects and developers. Her largest commission
is a 500m2 glass façade for Sainsbury's in Central
Milton Keynes, and her most unusual is The Art Bath.
Why jump for QEST?
After receiving her scholarship in 2008 Mel was able to drive forward with an exciting transfer of skills using enamels, glass and steel, to the benefit of her craft and her business. As a designer and a maker she believes that QEST provides a rare opportunity for professional craftspeople to develop their carefully honed skills, and care for the heritage of their craft through nurturing the survival of those skills. Please support more craftspeople in becoming QEST scholars of all kinds. Help us add to the already prolific QEST portfolio of scholars.
