From the City to a new craft
“Wiping her hands on her apron, Mia Sabel leans over her workbench for one of the tricker tasks in saddle-making. Using a pair of bulldog clips, she stretches wet leather over the sculpted seat of a saddle before turning it over to hammer in sharp tacks. The air is thick with the pungent scent of leather and glue.
Until three years ago, Mia, 42, worked in the City for a bank. She is in her second year retraining as a saddle-maker at Capel Manor College, North London, and using these skills to build a business designing furniture.
